Capt Hickey wished to improve the overall morale aboard ship and so it was devised an idea of involving the whole crew - especially those below decks in a `contest` to see who could come up with the most creative artwork for the aircraft aboard ship. This method of boosting morale eventually caught on throughout the air war which greatly enhanced the morale of air crews and ship`s companies on aircraft carriers.
